About Independent Emergency Physicians

Locally Rooted. Physician Led. Purpose Driven.

Independent Emergency Physicians (IEP) was founded in 1997 by eleven emergency physicians who believed that healthcare works best when physicians lead the way.

From that foundation, IEP has grown into a fully integrated, physician-owned organization that delivers acute care across the continuum—from emergency and hospital medicine to observation, urgent care, occupational health, and post-acute care.

Today, more than 500 IEP providers deliver high-quality, compassionate care throughout Southeast Michigan. We remain locally rooted and nationally recognized for advancing the physician-led model that puts patients and communities first.

Our Purpose

Our mission is simple: take care of the patient by taking care of the provider.

We believe empowered clinicians deliver better outcomes — not just clinically, but humanly. Our ownership structure ensures those delivering care have a voice in how it’s delivered, fostering accountability, engagement, and a culture of excellence.

Our Growth and Milestones

Over nearly three decades, IEP has expanded from a single emergency department to a network that spans multiple health systems and communities.

Each milestone represents a new way to serve — always guided by our physician-first, patient-centered philosophy.

Today, IEP provides care across 11 hospitals and seven through long-standing partnerships with leading health systems including Henry Ford Health and Trinity Health as well as seven IEP Urgent Care Clinics.

Our Commitment to Community

Through clinical service and philanthropy, we’ve provided over $75 million in uncompensated care and $6 million in community giving via IEP Charities.

We believe that accessible, equitable care is the cornerstone of strong communities — and that responsibility begins with us.

Our Hospital Partners

We provide integrated emergency, hospital, and observation medicine services at 11 hospital locations, that deliver continuity of care, clinical excellence, and improve outcomes through shared accountability.
